Upcoming changes for entering and leaving the Schengen area
On 10th November 2024, the EES (Entry Exit System) should be deployed within the Schengen area.
The EES is a new automated IT system for digitally collecting personal data of non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay, whether they require a short-stay visa or not, each time they cross the borders of the Schengen area.
The EES system will modernise the process for entering the Schengen area by replacing manual stamps in the passports of non-EU nationals.
An online tool will be made available to travellers to check the number of days they are still allowed to stay on the territory of Schengen area.

Population concerned
It applies to citizens of non-EU countries, whether or not they require a short-stay visa, who are staying for a short period (maximum 90 days out of a total period of 180 days) in the territory of a Member State of the Schengen area.
Data collected
- date and time of each entry and exit
- place of each entry and exit
- traveler’s surnames and first names
- passport number
- traveler’s photo
- traveler’s fingerprints
- facial image and fingerprints (called ‘biometric data’)
- any decision to refuse entry for a short stay
